German designer Philipp Plein is one of the first to answer Bethann Hardison’s plea for more black models on the runway. Using Milan Fashion Week as a platform, Plein employed all black models for his “Only Black” Spring 2014 runway presentation.
“My message is about breaking down barriers and breaking the rules. Doing the unexpected and shaking people from their complacence, forcing people to face the future where old prejudices have no place,” he tells Fashionista. “For example, the public expects to see pallid girls in high heels walking my show and I give them a fleet of black beauties in flats!”
In addition to brown beauties Liya Kedebe and Alek Wek, femcee Iggy Azalea graced the runway as a performer. In a behind-the-scenes video, Plein also hopes his actions will inspire other high-profile designers to do the same.
