MTV Artist To Watch: Iggy Azalea

MTV Artist To Watch: Iggy Azalea
Meet your new favorite smart-mouthed lady rapper: MTV Artist To Watch Iggy Azalea.
Generally speaking, when we see tall, willowy blonde girls, the last thing we'd expect is for them to be foul-mouthed rappers. But then again, we've never met anyone like Iggy Azalea: a tall, blonde, willowy rapper who is anything but submissive, generic, or cookie-cutter. For one thing, she's not afraid to break song title taboos ("Pu$$y," "Dirt In Your P***y A** B****"). Face it, girl's got more bleeps than an entire season of "The Sopranos." But you know us: We're suckers for taboo-breaking, fast-talking, take-no-s***, strong, sexy women. Especially when they remind us of other pop music icons like Ke$ha, Missy Elliot, Nicki Minaj, and Azealia Banks.

Read more about Iggy Azalea after the jump.

Born Amethyst Amelia Kelly (now there's a mouthful) in Sydney, Australia, Iggy started her rapping career at just 14 years old. Initially she joined up with some friends in the neighborhood, hoping to emulate Lisa "Left Eye" Lopez from TLC, but eventually left to do her own solo thing. (I mean, really, could YOU see Iggy sharing the fame?) And here comes the ballsiest part: In 2006, after saving up a bunch of money cleaning hotel rooms with her mom, Iggy permanently left Australia for the States, telling her parents that she was "going on holiday." (Word to the wise, Iggy: It's not a "holiday" if you never come back.)

After bouncing around the States for a few years, Iggy finally settled in Los Angeles in 2010, where she began uploading freestyle videos on YouTube, but things REALLY got going when her first official music video, "Pu$$y," hit the 'net in 2011. (Can't imagine why...) Iggy's Independent Art mixtape quickly followed, featuring guest appearances with everyone from Chevy Jones to Problem.

Now signed to major label Island Def Jam (!!), Iggy's got all kinds of things going on. For one thing, she's now a bona fide model (signed to Wilhelmina Models), she's opened for Rita Ora, she's released two mixtapes (Ignorant Art, TrapGold), an EP (Glory) and is gearing up to unleash her first official LP, The New Classic, in September. All we can say is, it's been a long time coming.

But for someone who hasn't even released a full LP yet, the MTV Artist To Watch has PLENTY of material under her twerking belt. Just look at such club-ready, one-word anthems as "Work" and "Bounce," two relatively new tracks that showcase the rapper's no-nonsense, expletive-riddled verses. Iggy's not afraid to push cultural boundaries either -- her Bollywood-inspired "Bounce" video sparked up a lil' controversy when the singer wore a full sari, bindi, and rode an elephant around Mumbai. (But, um, need we remind you that Selena Gomez basically did the same thing in her 2013 MTV Movie Awards "Come & Get It" performance?) No harm done, however -- Iggy's been through worse. After all, you don't spend your entire first single talking up your ladyparts without inviting a little critical whiplash.

Download Iggy's TrapGold mixtape for free on her website, watch four exclusive live performances below, and if you're heading to Europe this summer (grrrr), look out for her upcoming European tour dates!

Train and their newest single, "Bruises," featuring Ashley Monroe of Pistol Annies

This Train is Full Speed Ahead

photo: Ron Elkman/Getty ImagesA massive arena tour is enough to keep most bands pretty busy, but Train isn't content to travel in just one direction. While gearing up for their extensive "Mermaids of Alcatraz" North American tour, which kicks off July 11 in Virginia Beach, the San Francisco rockers sell their own brand of wine and chocolate to support a renowned charity that helps ill children and their families. They're also gearing up to release an action-packed mobile game based on one of their songs, all the while juggling active family lives. Whew!
The Grammy-winners are also re-releasing their latest album, California 37, on June 25. The deluxe, limited-edition version of the album is called Mermaids of Alcatraz Tour Edition and features three new songs and live versions of several tunes in addition to the hits "Drive By" and their newest single, "Bruises," featuring Ashley Monroe of Pistol Annies.
"There are some songs that didn't make it onto the [original] record and I still want them to be heard," lead singer Pat Monahan says of the album's re-release as he prepares to board a plane from Seattle to London. "There's the song 'Futon' that the whole band really loved and now it made it onto the [re-released] album. It will also help raise awareness and give people the chance to revisit it before coming to our shows."
Monahan says he's looking forward to hitting the road on Train's biggest tour ever, and connecting with fans not only onstage but face-to-face. "It feels like a family reunion," he says of the "Mermaids of Alcatraz" tour. "We share email addresses with some fans and we have dinner. I [direct message] fans over Twitter and Facebook. I've given a lot of fans my email address. People that aren't well, I try to get them good tickets. I feel very fortunate that I'm able to do that."
The band is also excited share the road with the Script, Gavin DeGraw, Michael Franti & Spearhead, and Monroe, who will be touring with Train. "It's like having a bunch of friends out," Monahan says. "It's so lovely that tickets have sold so well all over the country."
Train are also gearing up to release the mobile game, "50 Ways to Survive," based on their song "50 Ways to Say Goodbye."
photo: Ethan Miller/Getty Images"It's incredibly fun!" Monahan says of the game. "It comes out on June 25 around the same time as deluxe version of the album. Basically you have to try to save me from the things in the song like the shark and the purple Scion and you have to help me get to my girlfriend."
Despite evidence to the contrary, it's not all fun and games for the band. Train have been actively involved in supporting Family House, a Bay Area charity that provides temporary housing to families of seriously ill children receiving treatment at the University of California San Francisco Benioff Children's Hospital.
"We always try to do things as a band, and coming to an agreement about things can be difficult," Monahan confesses. "But coming to an agreement about where we were going to spend our extra time and money was quite simple when we did some investigating."
Monahan explains that he and his bandmates Jimmy Stafford and Scott Underwood share some important things in common – they're all parents, and they all wanted to get involved with a charity that benefited children. "We also wanted it to be local in San Francisco, and we wanted it to be a charity without a bunch of high-level executives flying around in helicopters," he says. "They're also the loveliest people. When I get back from London I plan on going there because there's one little boy that may not be doing so well. We'll try to play a bit of music there and go and say hi."
One way they raise funds for Family House is by donating proceeds from sales of their Save Me San Francisco wine and chocolate to the charity.
"We teamed up with Ghirardelli to create the chocolate because they make the best chocolate in North America," Monahan says. "We give 100 percent of profits from that [to Family House] and a bit of money from the wine that we don't invest back into the business." Proceeds from sales of the "50 Ways to Survive" mobile game will also be donated to Family House.
As if he weren't busy enough, Monahan plans to go back into the studio and work on new material as soon as he has the chance. "I want to put together that masterpiece record everybody always dreams of making," he says with a laugh. "I'm being told by the universe that now is the time. I wrote one song so far. Writing is like cooking — you make something and you think, 'Yeah, it was good, but it needs this.' So it's always a work in progress."

STORY HIGHLIGHTS NEW: A neighbor says he was a "low-key type of person" Rapper Da Brat stunned by Kelly's death Kris Kross topped the charts with "Jump" in 1992 Chris Kelly died Wednesday at an Atlanta-area hospital (CNN) -- Chris Kelly, one-half of the 1990s rap duo Kris Kross, died Wednesday at an Atlanta hospital after he was found unresponsive at his home. He was 34. How Kelly died isn't known, and the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office said an autopsy is planned for Thursday. Kelly, together with Chris Smith, shot to stardom in 1992 with "Jump," which spent eight weeks on top of the Billboard Hot 100. The duo opened for Michael Jackson that year on his Dangerous World Tour. Photos: People we lost in 2013 Photos: People we lost in 2013 And their penchant for wearing their clothes backward were, at least for a time, widely emulated. "I'm wearing my clothes to work backwards tomorrow," Michael Skolnik, editor in chief of the hip hop site Global Grind said, when he learned of the death. Leslie Tookes, a CNN project coordinator, lived next door to Kelly. Like others, she too was saddened by his untimely death. "We often heard him playing classical music and the piano," Tookes said. "He was a low-key type of person who was very talented and courteous, friendly and wonderful to our 5-year-old twins. "Indeed, gone too soon." Discovered at a mall Kelly and Smith were 13-year-olds when they were discovered in 1991 at an Atlanta mall by producer Jermaine Dupri. Going by the stage name Mac Daddy (with Smith known as Daddy Mac), the pair followed up their smash "Jump" with the single "Warm It Up." Together, the songs pushed their debut album, "Totally Krossed Out," to multiplatinum status. Next came 1993's "Da Bomb." But the album failed to find the following of the duo's debut, in large part because the boys had hit puberty and they were marketed with a tougher image. Their career never again reached the heights of their debut, but they continued to make music. In 1996, the duo released the album "Young, Rich and Dangerous." The pair reunited for one night in February for a 20th anniversary party for Dupri's So So Def label. Rapper Da Brat, who also performed that night, wrote about Kelly's death, "REST IN PEACE TO MY LIL BRO CHRIS KELLY OF KRIS KROSS. Dam wasn't we JUST at rehearsal and doin a So So Def20 show?"
