The christening of Prince George is just two weeks away, and the Royal Mint has been promising to let us in on the celebration. And now they have! The coins minted to honor the royal baby's big day at the Chapel Royal, St. James's Palace by the Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby, have been released. After approval by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, the coins are now officially available for purchase.
They make the prince the first royal baby to be honored with a christening coin from the Royal Mint -- even Prince William didn't get that honor! And from the looks of the coins (hold your horses, we're getting there), they're an absolutely perfect way to celebrate such an important ritual for little Prince George and his parents.
Each of the keepsakes reads, "To celebrate the Christening of Prince George of Cambridge 2013," and the words are accompanied by two harp-playing cherubs. Here's a closer look at the cheapest of the coins, an uncirculated silver 5-pound coin, which retails for around 13 pounds (or $21):
And check out the most expensive, a coin with one kilo of gold! You can pre-order them for a cool 50,000 pounds (about $80,000):
In all, there are nine coins in a variety of sizes and prices. Designed by John Bergdahl, they incorporate details from the royal christening traditions, including the lily font.
What a nice way to include the public in the royal family's private day! And what an idea for families planning their own christenings. I'm not suggesting we all run out and mint coins, but they're definitely upping the ante for party favors and mementos from the big day for all the other parents out there!
